I am often asked “which is the best natural deodorant?” Before answering this, let’s start from the beginning. Sweating is a normal detoxification process; it helps our bodies to rid itself of toxins. So, yes, you do want to encourage this process. But NO, I do not want to leave a lingering smell behind me. How do you curb the smell naturally without adding unnecessary toxins into your temple? Many mainstream deodorants contain harsh chemical ingredients that are toxic to your body. Read on to discover what you might actually be putting under your arms.
Why Natural Deodorant?
I will talk about just two key ingredients (there are many more). Aluminium is a common ingredient in mainstream deodorants. It works as an antiperspirant, blocking the sweat glands and preventing you from perspiring. Your body perspires naturally to detoxify and to manage homeostasis in relation to temperature. Why stop this? When your body becomes reliant upon aluminium, it forgets how to correct any imbalances on its own, it relies on this toxic chemical .
Another nasty group of ingredients commonly used in typical deodorants are parabens. Parabens are derived from petroleum. They have been linked to disruptions in endocrine system. Yes, your hormones. They are especially linked to oestrogen (“the primary female sex hormone.”) . Parabens can mimic oestrogen, which can lead to many health issues; cancer being one of the big ones. It is important to note that your skin absorbs what you lather on it, at varying degrees. Deodorant is applied “directly onto the lymph node area under the arm”. Into the lymph system these ingredients go! Does this not scare you?
‘Curb the smell.’ I could not agree more. Nobody wants your friends’ or work colleagues’ nostrils to flare as you mingle with them! We all desire to be odour free. You guessed it; aluminium free deodorant is step one. But what is a natural deodorant? It’s easy; ingredients are key. Natural deodorant ingredients may include:
- Coconut oil
- Aluminium free baking powder
- Arrowroot flour
- Tapioca flour
- Shea butter
- Bentonite clay
- Earth Clay
- Diatomaceous Earth
- Activated charcoal
- Magnesium
- Any number of pure essential oils/herbs
These ingredients help to neutralise odours and absorb wetness whilst allowing the body to breath as it should; so, you stay fresh.

I find this increases their efficiency and does not overload my gorgeous pits with too much of one product. And one final note to remember is to apply your natural deodorant before dressing and allow it to dry.
